Improv: quilted

I finally got around to quilting my improv quilt (previous post here):

.
I chose a gray thread and machine quilted wavy lines.  I also added some hand quilting in pink.  You can't see it in this picture (sorry it's a bad one), but I really like the effect.

My dilemma now is whether or not I should square it up.  I already trimmed it, but am not sure if I want to leave it that way, tweak it a bit or square it up.

I've been very inspired lately by liberated type of quilts from the likes of Nancy Crow, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and Tonya Ricucci, just to name a few.  In my searches I came across Mary Keasler's blog and quilt (which she made from a workshop with Nancy Crow). It's what inspired me to get this thing done and maybe leave it looking all organic rather than squared up.
What should I do? I'd like to know what you think.

  2. I'd just bind it and call it done! The slightly more organic shape works with the feel of the improv piecing.

  3. So beautiful! It reminds me of some of the Gee's Bend quilts. I would also leave it un-squared.

  4. Thank you, first of all, for mentioning my blog. I love your improv piece and of course I would naturally "deboxed", as I like to call it. I just saw an fantastic exhibit of African American quilts from the the collection of Corrine Riley at the Bellevue, WA museum. They are spectacular works of art and not one of them was squared up.

  5. I love this quilt!! The neutral color scheme with those little bits of pink is brilliant! I like the wavy quilting lines too. The wavy edge seems to fit this quilt perfectly. Bravo!

  6. That is such an awesome quilt! I don't know what to tell you - I'll have to check out those links. I have to say I always have a hard time with the squaring up part of quilting so many of my quilts end up with uneven sides (some way more obvious than others) and I always just think of it as part of the homemade character so reading this has got me thinking . . .
